Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has emerged as one of the most influential technological developments affecting higher education and academic research. Tools capable of generating text, images, code, summaries, and other forms of content are rapidly changing how students learn, how teachers design instruction, and how researchers conduct scholarly work. This article examines the opportunities, challenges, and long-term implications of generative AI for higher education and academic research. Using a qualitative research design based on systematic secondary research and documentary analysis, the study synthesizes scholarly literature, international policy documents, institutional guidance, and recent research concerning AI-assisted learning, academic integrity, assessment, research productivity, authorship, bias, privacy, and research ethics. The theoretical framework integrates the Technology Acceptance Model, Constructivist Learning Theory, the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge framework, and the concept of Responsible AI. The analysis indicates that generative AI can support personalized learning, improve accessibility, facilitate academic writing, accelerate literature exploration, assist coding and data analysis, and enhance administrative efficiency. However, uncontrolled adoption may increase academic dishonesty, misinformation, hallucinations, algorithmic bias, privacy risks, overdependence on automated tools, and inequalities in access. The article argues that higher education institutions should move from prohibition-oriented approaches toward responsible, transparent, and AI-literate integration. The future of academic research will depend on maintaining meaningful human judgment while using AI as an assistive rather than autonomous partner.
