Abstract

Inflation is one of the most significant macroeconomic forces influencing household welfare, consumer behavior, and economic stability. Persistent increases in the general price level reduce the purchasing power of household income and compel consumers to adjust their spending decisions. This research article examines the impact of inflation on household consumption patterns, focusing on changes in expenditure allocation, substitution behavior, savings, debt, consumption quality, and household welfare. The study adopts a qualitative research design based on a systematic review of secondary literature published before 2025, including academic books, peer-reviewed journal articles, and reports from international organizations. The theoretical framework integrates Keynesian consumption theory, the Permanent Income Hypothesis, the Life-Cycle Hypothesis, and behavioral economics to explain household responses to inflation. The literature indicates that inflation affects households unevenly according to income, wealth, employment conditions, household size, and access to financial resources. Low-income households are generally more vulnerable because a larger proportion of their budgets is allocated to essential goods such as food, energy, housing, and transportation. In response to inflation, households often reduce discretionary spending, substitute cheaper products, delay major purchases, increase precautionary savings where possible, or rely on credit and informal financial support. The study concludes that inflation is not merely a macroeconomic indicator but a powerful determinant of household economic behavior and social welfare. Effective anti-inflation policies should therefore combine price stability with targeted social protection and income-support measures.
